The Toy Train in Darjeeling is a major attraction for the tourists. This train track was inaugurated on 14th of July in the year 1881. The original engine which pulled the train was steam locomotive. However now it has been replaced by diesel engine. The Toy Train runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling on a narrow gauge track. The Train covers a distance of 88 km. The journey takes six and a half hours time to reach its destination. The Toy Train has both first class and second class compartments with toilets in each one of them. The compartments are given local names; they are Talung, Koktang, Sandakphu, and Khumbu. Starting from New Jalpaiguri it passes through Sukna and then it inclines reaching height of 7407 ft at Ghoom which is the highest station in India. The journey continues passing through loopy as well as zigzag tracks before reaching Darjeeling. The train passes through several townships and there are places where the Toy Train passes adjacent to the main road. Tourist covers the long stretch of hill road from NJP to Darjeeling by road and then takes a joy ride at Darjeeling station. There are two joy ride trips approximately three hours duration which starts from Darjeeling in day time. Though tickets can be booked from the Darjeeling Railway Station, people often prefer the Indian Railway website to book their tickets as there is a high demand in the tourist seasons.
